Is Distraction Osteogenesis Painful?

Is Distraction Osteogenesis Painful? With distraction osteogenesis, a bone is slowly split so that new bone can grow in between the two pieces. It is a surgery that is getting fantastic results in many different types of medicine.

In dental surgery, distraction osteogenesis is used to help people who have deformities and other problems in their face and jaw. Many people do not like the thought of distraction osteogenesis because of the fear of pain. There could be pain with any surgery, but the pain with distraction osteogenesis is no worse than the pain from any other surgery.

During the Surgery

If you are worried about your pain level during the actual surgery, that is not something that will be a problem. We will use general anesthesia, which means that you will not feel a thing during the procedure. Make sure that you have someone who can drive you home when we are done, because you will not be able to immediately operate a vehicle.

Once You Are Home
Once you are home, you could experience some pain, just like you would with any other outpatient surgery. You will receive a prescription that will help with the pain. We will also give you instructions on care. Purchase some soft foods that are easy to eat ahead of time so that you will have plenty to eat that will not cause you more pain.

While there is usually some pain associated with any oral surgery, you should not use that as an excuse to not have the surgery done. We will teach you what you need to do to manage the pain while you heal. We will also keep an eye on things, because you will need to return to the office several times. Soon you will be able to put the whole thing behind you.
