How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Our teeth are capable of lasting people a lifetime, but there are certain factors that prevent this. Among these factors are gum disease, osteoporosis, periodontal diseases, tooth trauma, and pregnancy hormones. Research suggests that 80 percent of adults in the United States alone suffer from some level of gum disease. Also, the research also concluded that food choices accompanied by poor oral health affect losing a tooth. Moreover, our mission here at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley is to find an alternative to get everyone’s smile back through the use of dental implants.

What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are like tooth roots that are being placed into the jawbone inside the gum area that will then allow a replacement tooth to be screwed into that area. This process has revolutionized the world of dentistry. It has also helped those who felt like they lost their smile when they lost their tooth or teeth. It is a more permanent way for them to smile. It has also been used to replace one or a considerable number of missing teeth, and all the accepted forms of tooth replacement such as bridges and dentures.

Maintaining Dental Implants

However, just like every other technological advance, this process does have a couple of drawbacks. The implants, while durable, are intended to last upwards of 25 years if properly maintained. However, if you receive an implant or implants due to an injury or accident, you may need to get replacements later in life. There are also other things that can reduce the lifespan of dental implants, these include, but are not limited to:
•  Smoking.
•  History of periodontal illness.
•  Poor oral hygiene.
•  Drug use.
•  Osteoporosis.

Many people question whether or not dental implants have this type of lifespan, especially when compared to dentures, which have a much shorter lifespan (4 to 7 years). However, a clinical study by Lekholm, Grondahl, and Jemt in 2006 have debunked previous claims about the survival of dental implants concluding that during the 20-year span, 99 percent of the people who underwent the procedure still have their implant intact. The study also showed that the force of your bite, health, oral hygiene and your dentist play crucial roles in the life expectancy of your implant. Also, with proper care, a dental implant has been proven to last a lifetime. Furthermore, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have concluded that the dental implants have a 95 percent success rate if they are properly taken of.
