Single Tooth Replacement With Dental Implants
If you have lost a tooth from injury or decay, we can help. Our team at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley can surgically implant a device that will serve as a permanent post for a dental crown, fully restoring your tooth. Dental implants have become increasingly more common; it is the only option that allows our patients to forget that they had ever lost a tooth.
The Implant Process
The loss of a tooth can be problematic for a variety of reasons. It may cause the patient concerns about their appearance; it may cause discomfort when chewing, it may even affect the patient's speech. From a dentistry viewpoint, a missing tooth can cause havoc to your oral health. A missing tooth leaves room for neighboring teeth to shift in an uncontrolled fashion, causing changes to the patient's bite, and the patient will lose bone mass through atrophy in the location of the missing tooth. Unless specifically guided by an orthodontist, there is no good result from the loss of a permanent tooth. Our surgeons at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley can help. Placing a dental implant is the only permanent restoration that does not rely on the support or alteration of neighboring teeth.
The process for implant placement begins with an evaluation and consultation. During this appointment, we will review your oral health and discuss your physical health. There are certain conditions and medications that can decrease a patient's ability to heal properly; we will want to review steps that we can take before surgery to increase proper healing. Another area that we will want to review is the amount of bone that the patient has available to place the implant in. In some cases, we may need to bulk up the bone with a simple in-office bone graft procedure.
There are options in materials used for your implant. Most patients receive a titanium metal implant because of its proven history of strength, durability, longevity, and your body's natural willingness to fuse with titanium. For patients who prefer a metal-free implant, we are now placing a zirconium implant. Zirconium is an all-ceramic implant that is known to provide many of the same benefits of titanium without the use of metal.
Placing your dental implant is an in-office procedure. One of our highly skilled oral surgeons at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley will begin with ensuring your comfort. Before surgery, we would have established the best course for anesthesia; most patients find a local anesthetic or conscious sedation to be sufficient.
With the patient comfortable, our surgeon will begin by creating the needed space in your bone with a specialized dental drill. The implant is then placed, and the area is sutured closed. The surgical process is about one hour in time, though that may vary based on the extent of the work being done. The patient is sent home for a period of healing.
The bone healing that needs to occur to stabilize your implant may take several months, though the soft tissue healing should occur within days. Most patients resume regular life within two days of surgery. If you experience unusual bleeding or symptoms of infection, we ask that you seek medical treatment immediately and then contact our office.
Once the implant is fully healed and stabilized, we will then turn you over to your referring dentist for the customization of a dental crown. Titanium implants are designed to have a crown placed; zirconium implants are a single unit device.
