Oral Pathology

There are many instances when your definite oral health condition is only known through oral pathology. Not all severe conditions have the obvious signs of pain or discomfort. Nevertheless, the absence of these symptoms does not mean there is nothing wrong. This is why a visual examination should be conducted. Here at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley, we make sure you are in the best oral health possible. We conduct oral pathology to check out the condition of your mouth and see if there are any issues that need treatment. Your oral health goes beyond healthy gums and teeth. Extensive examination must be done on occasion, to check that you are indeed as healthy as you look on the outside.

Understanding Oral Pathology

Routine oral examinations may yield something that could require further evaluation. The mouth’s soft tissue is lined with mucosa. This is a skin type where the texture should be smooth and where the color should be pink. Any changes in its texture or color are a sign that there is something wrong. This is where oral pathology comes in. Among the signs you should watch out for is frequent hoarseness of your voice or vocal strain, lumps inside the mouth, chronic sore throat, red or white patches in the mouth, trouble swallowing or chewing, and sores or bleeding inside the mouth that does not seem to heal. Any time you notice any oral tissue that is a different color, you also want to take note of this and have us check it out.

Common Pathologic Problems

One of the common pathologic problems is a hairy tongue. The tongue comes across as hairy or may appear black because of the overgrowth of bacteria or yeast infection in the mouth. This can be caused by poor oral hygiene, radiation treatments to neck or head, or even chronic use of antibiotics. Median palatal cysts are another common condition. This generally appears at the center of the palate and can cause many discomforts. It looks like a skin sac filled with fluid. Geographic tongue got its name from its appearance. The tongue develops a map-like visual aspect due to the absence of the papillae or the small bumps. The patches formed are usually red in color and are often found either on the side of the tongue or around it. These rash-like formations cause heightened sensitivity to some substances.
