Could You Need an Oral Graft Somewhere Down the Line?

Could You Need an Oral Graft Somewhere Down the Line? When gum recession occurs, the teeth lose a natural barrier that protects them from bacteria and trauma. If you suffer from gum recession for whatever reason, you could need oral graft somewhere down the line.

As frightening as it may sound, a dental graft is a common procedure that treats gum recession successfully on a regular basis.

What is Oral Grafting?

When the gum is not able to protect the tooth from bacteria and starts to recede, a dental graft may be necessary. Oral grafting is a procedure in which skin from somewhere in the mouth is removed and stitched to an exposed tooth that is causing discomfort or pain.

Types of Oral Grafts

There are three types of oral grafts to choose from:

•  Connective-tissue grafts. A flap of skin is cut in the palate and tissue is removed from under it.
•  Free gingival grafts. The tissue is removed directly from the roof of the mouth.
•  Pedicle grafts. Surrounding gum tissue is pulled over the exposed tooth.

In other, less invasive cases, a tissue bank is used for the surgery.

Why Do I Need an Oral Graft?

Some of the most common reasons for an oral graft surgery are:

•  Improve gum health,
•  Prevent further gum damage,
•  Stop gum recession,
•  Reduce tooth sensitivity,
•  Improve tooth appearance.

Our dentist will explain why you may be a good candidate for oral graft surgery in the future. Sometimes, even with the proper oral care habits, a patient could be predisposed to gum recession due to genetic factors. We will discuss what the best option for you is and explain what is involved in oral graft surgery.

It is very important to you keep your regular dental appointments, so we can detect any problems before they become chronic. Give us a call if you have any questions about oral grafts.
