Learn more about bone grafting and dental implants Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley in Simi Valley, CA.In most cases, a bone graft is a necessary step before surgically placing a dental implant. The key to a successful treatment is for the jawbone to heal and fuse around the implant, and to do this, there has to be sufficient bone present. Once fully healed, we want the implant to be strong and stable in its position. Working with our oral surgeons at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley, we can help you achieve the restoration needed, and take the correct steps before treatment, elevating success.

A bone graft is a simple in-office procedure, done with local anesthetic in less than an hour. We can place a bone graft in tandem with an extraction procedure or any time after. The goal is to build up bone material or to maintain it. When a patient loses a tooth, whether due to decay or trauma, there is an immediate response of atrophy or resorption in the supporting jawbone. All of our bone requires movement and motion to stay exercised and healthy. Our jawbone receives exercise from chewing food. When a tooth is lost, so is the tooth root, which served as a connecting piece transferring the energy of movement to the jaw, keeping the jaw healthy and robust. With the connection lost, the jawbone is no longer exercised and it responds by decreasing in size. This reduced jawbone size has become synonymous with older age, and so the facial appearance is older.

A bone graft will benefit you by:
•  Increasing the amount of bone available prior to your implant procedure.
•  Assist you in restoring a more youthful facial appearance.

Bone Graft Procedure

A dental implant can help fill out your facial shape and keep your bone healthy, but first, we need to bulk up the bone. The surgeon that you are working with at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley will place bone material at the site that it is needed. Bone material can come from one of three sources including:
•  Autograft: An autograft refers to taking bone directly from the patient, auto meaning self. Most often we will use bone fragments from the patient to place in the empty tooth socket. Our surgeon will take a tiny section of bone from the patient's chin or other chosen skull area.
•  Allograft: An allograft refers to using donated bone material. Donated bone is processed, making it an option that is safe and doable.
•  Synthetic Graft: An option available is the use of synthetic bone material that is biocompatible.

The surgeon that you are working with will simply open the tissue at the surgical site, place the bone graft material, apply a protective coating that will assist in healing and then suture the area closed for healing. Bone growth can take several months to reach the levels that are needed. Our team at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley will provide more information during your evaluation.

When necessary, a bone graft can greatly enhance the implant treatment, allowing for better structure. If you have questions or would like more information, we invite you to contact our Simi Valley location. Our staff is happy to assist you. (805) 328-2180
