The Dental Implants Procedure
Simi Valley, CA

At Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley, we proudly offer dental implants for your tooth replacement needs. Dental implants are a revolutionary treatment that provides an alternative to traditional dentures and bridges. Implants use small titanium posts, which are surgically inserted directly into your jawbone. Your natural bone fuses to these posts in a process called osseointegration, stabilizing the posts in your jaw. They are then used to support your replacement crowns, which are screwed securely into place. While dental implants are more involved than traditional treatments, they offer significant benefits.

Dental Implants Benefits

There are several benefits associated with dental implants:
•  They feel and function just like your natural teeth.
•  The crowns look just like the crowns of your natural teeth. Ceramic can be made to perfectly match the color of your natural teeth, and it also reflects light in a similar fashion.
•  They offer superior comfort. The crowns are supported by the posts rather than your gums.
•  They can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
•  The posts function like the roots of your teeth and stimulate your jawbone. This then aids in maintaining its strength and integrity.

The First Step

Before actually undergoing surgery, you first need to undergo an initial consultation. This consultation is designed to determine if implants are the right treatment for you. We perform a comprehensive oral exam, complete with a visual inspection and digital imaging. This exam gives us a complete picture of your oral health, allowing us to determine if you have any issues such as tooth decay, tooth damage, or gum disease. Digital images allow us to assess the condition of your jawbone and determine if the jaw is strong enough to support the restorations or if you need a bone graft first. They also enable us to create a customized treatment plan unique to your needs.

Your Surgical Procedure

If implants are determined to be a good option for you, you are then scheduled for surgery. Surgery is done under a local anesthetic as well as sedation. The procedure begins with small incisions in your gums, exposing your jawbone. We then drill holes into the bone, according to your treatment plan. Once the holes are drilled, the titanium posts are placed inside. Finally, the gum tissue is sutured closed around the posts, leaving a small amount exposed above the gum line, and place temporary teeth.

Postsurgical Recovery

Healing after implant surgery can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. During this time, the bone gradually fuses to the posts. This process, known as osseointegration, stabilizes the posts within your jaw. To ensure proper healing, it is essential that you rest. You should avoid any strenuous activities, including bending over, heavy lifting, or other activities that can increase the heart rate too much. You will also need to maintain a soft, or even liquid, diet. This diet should consist of nutritious foods, and you should not skip meals. As you heal, normal activities and a normal diet can be resumed. You are provided with specific aftercare instructions following your procedure.

Getting Your Permanent Crowns

After you have fully healed and the implants are fully integrated into your jaw, we then begin the final stage of your treatment. This stage is the creation and placement of your permanent crowns, which takes two separate appointments. At the first appointment, we remove the temporary teeth and place the abutments. Impressions of your mouth are taken and then sent to the dental lab. At the lab, your crowns are designed and created based on the exact specifications of your mouth. When they are ready, you return for your second appointment, and we screw your new teeth securely in place.

Dental implants may be more involved than bridges and dentures, but this revolutionary treatment offers numerous benefits over traditional methods of tooth replacement.
