What Are Dental Implants?
Simi Valley, CA

Tooth loss is a serious issue. When you lose teeth, all aspects of your life are affected. Tooth loss impacts your abilities to eat and speak. Your digestion and oral health suffer. Healthy teeth on either side of the empty space begin to shift out of natural alignment, throwing off your bite. Your smile and your facial appearance are affected, leading to self-consciousness. Replacing your missing teeth is essential for restoring your quality of life. Here at Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley, we can help with dental implants.

Components of Dental Implants

Dental implants have a long and fascinating history. Today, they are a modern alternative to bridges and dentures, and have quickly become the most popular treatment available. Dental implants consist of three components:
•  Posts. The posts are the part of the implant that is surgically inserted into your jawbone. Typically made from titanium, the posts provide support for your replacement teeth. As you heal from surgery, your bone fuses to the posts in a process known as osseointegration. This process stabilizes the posts in your jaw, making them strong and secure.
•  Abutments. The abutments are the connectors that are placed on the exposed ends of the posts. They help to provide stability for the replacement teeth.
•  Crowns. The crowns are the part of the implants that replace the visible surfaces of your missing teeth. They are generally made from ceramic, which mimics the properties of natural enamel, including the exact color and the way in which the teeth reflect light.

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a very versatile treatment that can be used in a variety of different situations. There are several different types of implants, including:
•  Single tooth. One post supports one crown.
•  Multiple teeth. This type of implant is used to replace two or more teeth. The number of posts required is dependent upon a few factors, including the condition of your jawbone and the number of teeth missing.
•  Full arch replacement. If you are missing a whole arch of teeth, a full arch replacement, or implant supported denture, may be used. A full arch or replacement teeth is supported by six to eight posts.
•  All-on-4® Treatment Concept. In many cases, if you do not have enough bone mass in your jaw to support the implant posts, a bone graft is needed. However, if you are missing an entire arch of teeth, you may be a candidate for the All-on-4® Treamtent Concept. Rather than six to eight posts, only four posts are used. These posts are implanted strategically to take full advantage of your remaining bone mass. Not only are your teeth replaced, but the need for a bone graft is also avoided.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants restore the functions of your missing teeth and give you back your beautiful smile. There are also several other benefits associated with this treatment as well:
•  They look, feel, and function just like your real teeth. Ceramic can be stained and finished to look exactly like real teeth, and the material reflects light just like enamel. Moreover, because they feel completely natural, your speech is restored without having to relearn to talk.
•  They offer superior comfort. The teeth are supported by the posts rather than your gums.
•  They are secure and stable. The teeth will not move around in your mouth or fall out.
•  You regain your confidence.
•  The posts stimulate your jawbone just like the roots of your natural teeth. This stops and prevents bone loss in your jaw, which helps to preserve the integrity of your jaw.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Dental Implants?

While dental implants provide numerous benefits, there are a few disadvantages as well:
•  They require surgery.
•  There is a recovery period involved.
•  They are a more expensive option.
•  If you do not have sufficient bone mass, you may require a bone graft.
