Simple Tooth Extractions
Your teeth are an important feature of your mouth. They perform a variety of essential tasks every single day, including biting and chewing food, controlling airflow when you speak and providing you with a beautiful smile. Taking care of your teeth is critical for keeping them strong and healthy. Sometimes, however, teeth may experience damage or decay. In these cases, measures are taken to try and preserve the tooth, such as a filling, a crown, or a root canal. There are some instances in which damaged or decayed teeth cannot be saved. If a tooth cannot be saved, it needs to be extracted. At Westlake Oral and Plastic Surgery at Simi Valley, we can perform the necessary extractions. One type of tooth extraction that we perform is simple tooth extractions.
Why Do Compromised Teeth Need to Be Extracted?
Damaged or decayed teeth need to be addressed as quickly as possible. Ignoring a severely damaged tooth, or even one that may only have minor damage can have serious consequences on your oral, and overall health. Minor damage, such as a small chip, crack or decay, can worsen over time. Severe damage can allow bacteria into the affected tooth. This can then lead to a painful infection. The longer the infection goes untreated, the more it grows. Eventually, bacteria can enter the bloodstream, which can then contribute to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. While measures are taken to save a damaged tooth, there are some instances in which this is not possible. In these cases, extractions are recommended.
Reasons for Tooth Extraction
Before a tooth is extracted, a thorough oral exam is performed. We conduct a visual inspection of the interior of your mouth, which allows us to assess the condition of the crown of the affected tooth. We also take x-rays, which allow us to determine the extent of any damage below the gumline. If it is determined that no restorative option will be effective, we then move forward with the extraction.
There are several different reasons for a simple extraction:
Simple Tooth Extractions
Simple tooth extractions are a fairly straightforward procedure and are done under local anesthetic. The anesthetic helps you to avoid feeling any pain or discomfort during the procedure. You will only feel pressure. A special tool called an elevator is used to loosen the gum tissue and ligaments surrounding the base of the tooth. Forceps are then used to grip the tooth and move it back and forth, widening the socket. When the socket is wide enough, the tooth is simply lifted free. Once the tooth is free, gauze is packed into the space to stop the bleeding. If necessary, we can also suture the area closed. With the affected tooth gone, options can then be discussed for replacement.
